I like the way the Message translates, Matt 19:11-12
11-12 But Jesus said, “Not everyone is mature enough to live a married life. It requires a certain aptitude and grace. Marriage isn’t for everyone. Some, from birth seemingly, never give marriage a thought. Others never get asked—or accepted. And some decide not to get married for kingdom reasons.
BUT IF YOU’RE CAPABLE OF GROWING INTO THE LARGENESS OF MARRIAGE, DO IT.
That is interesting, and it is certainly true that many are not mature enough to live a married life.
But it is not really what this text is saying. Jesus is talking about living a single life being a special gift from God. Paul is an example of this. Let the man who feels himself capable of forbearing to marry, and embracing the single life, embrace it; but none can do it but he to whom it is given. Read it again in a real translation, and you’ll see it.
I read it in both translations; the message brought my focus about maturing love.
I was 30 before I got married and it collapsed because we married on immature attraction we had in the beginning and it didn’t sustain our marriage.
I later learned to mature from focusing only on my needs and it matured into we needs. Love matures; in today’s society I see marriages collapsing because of marrying too young.
Being single and living for God is a special gift from God!
I believe I have found with God and my wife a heightened intimacy that only matures with time spent together.
